User Research

Competitive Analysis

There are many competitor applications in this space. GM has a duty to its customers to provide a customizable, functional vehicle companion application. I conducted a competitor analysis of GM’s top 4 competitors to understand what features most other OEMs include in their applications, how users interact with these features, and what they think of the applications overall.

Empathy Mapping

Site Map

An updated site map was created after Information Architecture changes were made to the application. The latest iteration of the app reduced bottom navigation options and organized features together in a way that would make them more findable and easy to use.

Launch

The initial release of GM Vehicle Apps was in 2010. Since then many updates and iterations have been developed with over 5 million app users across the globe.

Current iterations of the MyBrand apps include a new design library and updated components and variables.

Reviews

MyBrand apps have well over 1 million reviews on Google Play and Apple.

Next for MyBrand

Additional improvements I was most recently exploring for the MyBrand apps included Remote Start enhancements, Location Alerts, and redesigning the Remote Commands experience. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to explore designs for features that are still in development, including Remote Ignition Block, Digital Key, and Theft Alert Notifications.

As we work with our management and technical partners, we are continuing to explore how we can provide vehicle control in a simple, seamless way. With integration into public charging, home energy management, and digital key access, GM is continuing to explore ways to power our user’s world inside and outside their vehicles. Creating a dynamic ecosystem that connects users and their families to their vehicles, home and businesses allows GM and our customers to feel secure and prepared anywhere, any time.
